JAMMU: BJP J&K President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma (CA) raised the issue of the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in J&K in the Rajya Sabha, seeking clarity on one of the most crucial welfare schemes affecting thousands of economically weaker families in Jammu & Kashmir.
Through an unstarred question, he sought district-wise details of houses sanctioned and completed, the reasons behind delays in pending projects, the financial assistance being extended to beneficiaries, convergence with other welfare schemes, and the timeline for completion of the remaining houses. The written reply from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs provides a comprehensive status of the scheme in the Union Territory and reflects the Centre's continued focus on ensuring that deserving families receive the benefits of safe and permanent housing.
The reply from Union MoS Tokhan Sahu, on behalf of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs reveals that a total of 45,982 houses, including 3,398 houses under PMAY-U 2.0, have been sanctioned in Jammu & Kashmir. Out of these, 43,907 houses have been grounded, while 35,961 houses have already been completed and delivered to beneficiaries till June 2026. The Government has also approved ₹734.44 crore as Central Assistance, out of which ₹544.40 crore has already been released to the Union Territory, demonstrating the Centre's strong financial commitment towards providing secure housing to deserving families.
Sat Sharma said that access to a permanent house is one of the strongest pillars of social security and human dignity. He said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government has transformed the housing sector by ensuring that welfare schemes directly benefit the poorest sections of society without discrimination. He added that the government's focus is not merely on constructing houses but on creating better living standards with access to essential civic amenities.
He further said that the Ministry's reply also reflects the Centre's integrated approach, wherein beneficiaries are encouraged to receive the benefits of several flagship schemes alongside housing, including PM SVANidhi, PM Vishwakarma, Ayushman Bharat, Ujjwala Yojana, PM Surya Ghar, AMRUT 2.0, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and other welfare initiatives, thereby improving the overall quality of life of beneficiary families.
Sat Sharma noted that the Ministry has extended the PMAY-U implementation period till 30 September 2026 for completion of under-construction houses and continues to regularly review progress with States and Union Territories to ensure timely completion and occupancy. He expressed confidence that the remaining houses would also be completed expeditiously, enabling more deserving families in Jammu & Kashmir to realise the dream of owning a pucca house under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
