Srinagar, September 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution seeking exemption from the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for teachers appointed before October 31, 2019.
BookWalking ToursThe resolution was moved by School Education Minister Sakeena Itoo and seeks an amendment to Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, to exempt teachers appointed before the specified date from appearing for the TET.
The House also urged the Union Government to take necessary legal steps and issue the required notification through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
During the discussion, several MLAs supported the resolution. NC MLA Farooq Shah said teachers who have been serving for several years should be exempted from the TET, while newly appointed teachers should undergo the examination. He also called for regular training for serving teachers and strengthening District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs).
Another NC MLA, Nazir Gurezi, backed the resolution and highlighted the role of teachers in shaping future professionals.
Itoo thanked the members for supporting the resolution and said Jammu and Kashmir would become the second state or Union Territory to pass such a resolution.
She said the J&K Government has already approached the Supreme Court on the issue and urged BJP members to take up the matter with the Centre.
After the discussion, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather put the resolution to a voice vote, following which it was passed unanimously by the House.
