SRINAGAR, Sept 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Jammu and Kashmir Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2026, following detailed discussion by members of the House.
Cooperative Minister Javid Ahmad Dar moved the Bill, which seeks to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Cooperative Societies Act, 1989, repeal the Jammu and Kashmir Self-Reliant Cooperative Act, 1999, and provide a transitional framework for self-reliant cooperative societies under the principal Act.
Several legislators, including Nizam-ud-din Bhat, Pawan Gupta, Balwant Singh Mankotia, Arjun Singh Raju and Rajiv Jasrotia, participated in the debate and offered suggestions on various provisions of the legislation.
Responding to the issues raised, the Minister explained the objectives behind the proposed amendments and said the framework was aimed at strengthening cooperative institutions and improving their functioning.
The Bill seeks to bring greater coherence to the cooperative sector and ensure a smooth transition of self-reliant cooperative societies into the framework of the 1989 Act.
The legislation was passed through a voice vote after the House considered the suggestions raised during the discussion.
