NEW DELHI, Aug 14: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said the true meaning of freedom lies in ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations and contribute to building India as the foremost nation in the world.
Addressing the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, Murmu extended her greetings to citizens in India and abroad and described the Tricolour as a powerful symbol of the country's freedom.
“On August 15, 1947, Bharat Mata was liberated from the shackles of subjugation. Every citizen became an architect of the destiny of Independent India,” she said.
The President said that freedom carries a deeper responsibility, with citizens playing an active role in the country's development.
“The true meaning of freedom lies in ensuring that all citizens are able to utilise opportunities to fulfil their aspirations, and work towards the goal of making India the foremost nation in the world,” she said.
Murmu praised the contributions of students, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, healthcare workers, labourers and farmers to nation-building.
She also acknowledged the role of sportspersons, artisans, artists, intellectuals, employees in the private and public sectors, people's representatives, judicial officials, civil servants, investors, social workers and Safai Mitras in India's progress.
The President said every citizen who faithfully performs the Fundamental Duties enshrined in the Constitution is an important partner in the nation's development.
She expressed appreciation for their dedication and contribution towards strengthening the country.
Murmu also paid tribute to the soldiers of the Armed Forces, Armed Police Forces and police personnel, praising their unwavering commitment and devotion to duty.
She further lauded the Indian diaspora and officials serving in Indian embassies abroad for enhancing the country's prestige and honour on the global stage.
