New Delhi, October 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday called upon police forces across the country to work together to eliminate drug abuse and narcotics networks, stressing that the fight against drugs must be intensified to achieve a drug-free India by the end of 2029.

Shah said drug abuse poses a serious threat to future generations and that proceeds from the illegal narcotics trade can provide financial support to organisations involved in anti-national activities.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of eliminating narcotics from the country by December 31, 2029, the Home Minister urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen coordination and adopt a united approach to tackle the drug menace.

Paying tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, Shah emphasised the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the nation.

He said the remaining months of 2026, along with the years 2027, 2028 and 2029, must be dedicated to a determined and coordinated fight against drugs.

Shah also flagged off a nationwide motorcycle rally themed “Fight Against Drugs” from the National Police Memorial as part of the efforts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of narcotics and strengthen public participation in the campaign.

The initiative highlights the government's commitment to combating drug trafficking, protecting young people and building a healthier, drug-free society.
