Srinagar, Aug 23: Jammu and Kashmir has scripted a new chapter in fencing with Shriya Gupta and Vishal Thappar becoming the first sabre fencers from the Union Territory to earn selection for the Asian Games 2026.

The selection marks a significant breakthrough for fencing in J&K, with both athletes set to represent India at the continental sporting event.

Shriya Gupta has been selected for both the individual and team sabre events, while Vishal Thappar will compete in the team event.

The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council congratulated the two fencers, saying their selection reflected their talent, hard work, discipline and determination.

The Council also appreciated the efforts of their coaches and support staff, whose sustained guidance and contribution helped the athletes reach the international stage.

The achievement has brought pride to Jammu and Kashmir, with Gupta and Thappar now preparing to carry the region’s hopes as they compete for India at the Asian Games.

The Sports Council wished both fencers success in their international campaign and expressed confidence that they would make J&K and the country proud.

“Go forth and make history,” the Council said while extending its best wishes to the athletes.
