PESHAWAR, Aug 14: A police constable was killed and another injured after unidentified militants attacked a security checkpost in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, police said.
According to officials, militants targeted the Kohi Sar police checkpost, located under the jurisdiction of Barang Police Station in Bajaur district, in the early hours of Friday.
Police personnel deployed at the checkpost retaliated, leading to an exchange of heavy gunfire. One constable was killed in the attack, while another sustained injuries, officials said.
The Bajaur District Police Officer expressed condolences to the family of the slain policeman and assured that efforts were underway to maintain security in the area.
No militant group or individual immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed recurring militant violence in recent years, along with cross-border movement of fighters from Afghanistan and repeated security operations.
Pakistan’s federal government has accused the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of carrying out attacks in the province following the collapse of its ceasefire agreement with Islamabad in November 2022.
