Kathmandu: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 903, while nearly 4,250 people remain missing, authorities said on Monday, as rescue teams continued their search operations for a sixth consecutive day.
Bodies have been recovered from all eight affected districts, with rescuers racing against time to locate missing people and evacuate those stranded in flood-hit areas.
The disaster struck northern and central parts of Nepal on August 26, devastating towns and villages. Authorities believe the floods may have been triggered by the collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the highest number of bodies has been recovered from Chitwan, where 272 deaths have been recorded. Nawalparasi East reported 207 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi West with 151 and Gorkha with 62.
The remaining bodies were recovered from Nuwakot (95), Dhading (55), Tanahu (37), and Rasuwa (24).
The NDRRMA said 4,247 people are still missing, including 85 security personnel and 320 foreign nationals.
Rescue and recovery operations are continuing across the affected districts as authorities work to reach isolated communities and account for those still untraced.
