Bunia (Congo), Aug 28: The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has spread to two additional health zones, taking the total number of affected areas to 60, according to the latest figures released by the government on Friday.
The newly affected zones are Biena and Manguredjipa in North Kivu province, where the case fatality rate is reportedly higher than the overall rate of 48 per cent, partly due to delays in the response, according to Health Ministry data.
The outbreak has so far recorded 5,794 confirmed cases, including 2,786 deaths, the ministry said.
Authorities said the disease is spreading at an unprecedented pace, outstripping efforts to track cases and contain its transmission.
