Dr Farooq Abdullah Says Delhi-Kashmir Trust Deficit Continues to Widen
Srinagar, July 11: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday alleged that the trust deficit between the Centre and the people of Jammu and Kashmir has increased over the years, accusing New Delhi of failing to fulfil its commitments to the Union Territory.
Addressing party workers on the death anniversary of Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, wife of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Farooq said his party would continue to pursue the interests of Jammu and Kashmir through democratic means.
Recalling his interactions with successive Prime Ministers, including former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Abdullah said assurances were repeatedly made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir but remained unfulfilled.
Referring to Rao’s statement that “the sky is the limit” for Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah said the people had never demanded separation from India but wanted the region’s position and dignity strengthened within the country.
Abdullah also recalled the all-party meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the abrogation of Article 370, saying he had conveyed concerns over the lack of trust between Delhi and Kashmir.
“I told him that unfortunately, we do not trust you and you do not trust us. First, let us build this trust,” Abdullah said, adding that despite assurances to bridge the gap, the distance had continued to grow.
Emphasising that the people of Jammu and Kashmir wanted respect and dignity, the NC chief said the region was an integral part of India and its people sought restoration of their honour through peaceful means.
He also criticised political opponents in the Union Territory, accusing some leaders of working at the behest of Delhi and urging them to stand with the people.
Praising the Omar Abdullah-led government, Farooq said the administration was working for public welfare despite facing challenges. He also expressed confidence that the obstacles faced by the government would be overcome and urged party workers to remain united in their efforts for the rights of Jammu and Kashmir.
