New Delhi, Sep 12: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent in the office of the Commissioner of CGST and Central Excise and a CGST consultant in connection with an alleged Rs 1 crore bribery case, officials said.
The arrests followed registration of an FIR on Wednesday based on a complaint filed by the project head of a private real estate company in New Panvel, Maharashtra's Raigad district.
The company was involved in the redevelopment of two buildings in Sector 17, New Panvel, including 24 flats belonging to the CGST and Central Excise, Raigad Commissionerate.
According to the CBI, the complainant alleged that Superintendent Pankaj Kumar demanded Rs 1 crore for issuing a no-objection certificate (NOC) and handing over the flats for redevelopment.
During verification of the complaint, the accused officer allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh in cash on September 10, Rs 20 lakh as a down payment for a flat purchased by him and Rs 70 lakh at a later stage for other officials of DG HRD, CGST, New Delhi, a CBI spokesperson said.
The agency laid a trap on Thursday after the Superintendent allegedly instructed the complainant to hand over Rs 10 lakh to CGST consultant Prasad Kumar Swami.
The CBI arrested both accused on Thursday and produced them before the competent court on Friday.
The court subsequently remanded the two accused to two days of police custody, officials said.
The agency is continuing its investigation into the alleged bribery arrangement and the role of other officials.
