GUWAHATI, Aug 8: The flood situation in Assam remained grim as the death toll rose to 98, while more than 1.55 lakh people continued to be affected across 13 districts, according to an official bulletin.
The latest death was reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its latest bulletin.
Floodwaters have affected 13 districts — Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo — covering around 464 villages.
A total of 1,55,849 people have been affected by the floods. Golaghat remains the worst-hit district with 58,750 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286 and Jorhat with 25,259.
The situation has shown some improvement compared with Thursday, when more than 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts were affected.
The administration has set up 55 relief camps, where more than 10,000 displaced people are currently taking shelter. Another 18 relief distribution centres are also operational to provide essential supplies to affected residents.
The Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Golaghat town and Numaligarh in Golaghat district, while the Kushiyara River has also crossed the danger level in Sribhumi district.
Floodwaters have submerged around 10,748.64 hectares of cropland, while more than 47,000 animals have been affected.
The floods have also caused damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges and residential houses, across several affected districts, the bulletin said.
