New Delhi, October 16: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday raised concerns over the law-and-order situation in Punjab, citing the alleged rise in drug trafficking, gangsterism and organised crime. He questioned the Bhagwant Mann-led government over the safety of the state's residents and called for strict action against criminal networks. In a post on X, Shah referred to two incidents — a father allegedly consuming poison under pressure in Dirba and the broad-daylight killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa. Shah said the incidents had raised serious questions about law and order in the state. He also noted that Jhota's father had levelled allegations against the Punjab government and a local MLA. The Union Home Minister said the Ministry of Home Affairs would seek responses from the Punjab government regarding both incidents. Questioning Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Shah said the people of Punjab wanted answers and concrete results rather than announcements. He called for a decisive crackdown on drug networks and an impartial investigation into allegations of political patronage to criminals. Shah further emphasised the need to protect the state's youth from drugs, ensure strict action against offenders and uphold the rule of law so that citizens could live without fear. His remarks come amid an ongoing political exchange between the BJP-led Centre and the AAP government in Punjab over drug trafficking, organised crime and public safety.
