Srinagar : The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has appreciated the role of security agencies in Kashmir for conducting ‘successful anti-militancy operations since January this year’.

Official sources told  that while praising the role of forces for successful operations against militants, the MHA has also lauded Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central reserve police forces for being at the forefront of the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

However sources said that MHA has called for further increased surveillance on all fronts in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure safety and security of the people.

“The MHA has also stressed on the need to ensure safety of the general public” sources maintained.

Meanwhile with the killing of at least 100 above militants since January this year, the security agencies here maintained that they have ‘achieved major success in Jammu and Kashmir against militants in the last three years’.

Sources told  that the number of militants killed since January this year was around 100 to 120.“In 2018-19 around 270 militants were killed which was higher than 2016- 2017” they said.

Sources said that in 2010, as many as 270 militants were killed in action by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. The number reduced to 119 in 2011. Then in 2012, 84 ultras were killed, 100 in 2013, 110 (2014), 113 (2015), 165 (2016) and 218 last year, the sources said.

Sources said the higher number of militant casualties in 2018- 19 and now in 2020 was because of pinpoint intelligence and meticulous operations by the security agencies. One of the top officials of the police told  that they will intensify these operations in the days to come.

He admitted that the militant activities increased during the last two months in Kashmir but will “go all-out and intensify the operations against the militants now”.

The official said that the direct security control of the Home Ministry impacts on the security situation of the valley and “things work very effectively”. Sources said that the MHA has also asked the security forces in Kashmir to go pro-active and make Jammu and Kashmir militancy-free.

“We are dealing with a hostile neighbour (Pakistan) and we will have to foil its attempts. There are reports of infiltration from Pakistan” the MHA has said.

Sources said that the MHA has emphasized upon the officers to maintain pressure on militants and exhorting all ranks to remain vigilant to maintain law and order and security of the area. The MHA has directed for “well organised and pro-active” operations against the militants, particularly in upper reaches, to increase the sense of security among the masses,” sources maintained.
