- Rs 333.5 lakh released to Kargil, Rs 580.7 lakh to Leh

Leh, Aug 29: In a significant move to boost rural development and provide employment opportunities, the Rural Development Department has sanctioned and released the first installment of funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the financial year 2024-25. The amount sanctioned totals Rs 9.14 crore (approximately), allocated for both material and administrative components.
Out of the total released fund, Rs 333.564 lakhs have been granted to Kargil district whereas Rs 580.71 lakhs has been given to Leh district.
The released funds include Rs 792.95 lakhs for the material component and Rs 121.324 lakhs for administrative expenses. The funds have been distributed across the districts of Kargil and Leh, with Kargil receiving Rs 292.70 lakhs for materials and Rs 40.864 lakhs for administration. Leh has been allocated Rs 500.25 lakhs for materials and Rs 80.46 lakhs for administration.
The funds are to be used strictly according to the guidelines of MGNREGS, with specific emphasis on clearing pending liabilities and ensuring no re-appropriation of funds without prior approval. The order, signed by the Administrative Secretary of Ladakh, Amit Sharma, also highlights the necessity of adhering to all financial norms and ensuring that expenditures do not exceed the sanctioned limits.
“Any violation of these directions will lead to warranted action against the erring officers. The administration aims to ensure that the funds are utilized efficiently for the benefit of the rural population of Ladakh, providing much-needed employment opportunities and development in the region,” the order stated.
The MGNREGS is a flagship program of the Government of India aimed at providing a legal guarantee of employment to rural laborers. The scheme has been instrumental in providing a safety net for rural households and has contributed significantly to rural development.
This development is seen as a significant step towards the development of rural Ladakh and is expected to bring relief to rural households. The administration has appealed to the beneficiaries to make the most of this opportunity and to utilize the funds judiciously.
