Drass, Aug 28: Lieutenant Governor UT Ladakh, Brig. (Dr.) B.D Mishra (Retd.) and First Lady Neelam Mishra visited Government Degree College Drass for the inauguration of Hostel Block (Interim college) Residential Zone GDC Drass and Pickle Making Skill Centre in presence of Chairman, Chief Executive Councillor Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone, Commissioner, Secretary Higher Education Smt. Padma Angmo, Deputy Commissioner Srikant Balasaheb susey, Abdul Samay Councillor Ranbirpora Drass, Abdul Wahid Councillor Bhimbat Drass and Principal Government Degree College Kargil Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi.
At their arrival, Principal GDC Drass Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi welcomed the guests with flower bouquets followed by a ceremonial plantation under ‘ek ped maa ke naam’ by LG, First Lady and CEC Kargil. The Hostel Block (interim College) residential block was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor.
The guests visited the Pickle Making Skill Centre which was inaugurated by First lady Neelam Mishra. They surveyed and interacted with the students and instructor of Pickle Making Skill Centre. Students of the Department of Botany displayed mushrooms cultivated by the students and the specimens of local flora collected by the students from the Drass region.
Commissioner, Secretary Higher Education Padma Angmo presented the formal welcome note. She welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries on behalf of the entire higher education fraternity. While addressing the audience, she highlighted the initiatives taken by the Higher Education Department for the overall development of infrastructure and upliftment of academic ventures in the colleges of UT Ladakh. She also asserted the importance of innovation in Skill Centres established in various colleges that are vital in nurturing future ready skilled forces.
Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhone addressed the gathering and congratulated the Principal, faculty and students for the newly inaugurated hostel building. He said that higher education is one of the agents of social change and stakeholders of education play a vital role in the progress and development of a social milieu.
He assured his full support to the college in addressing the dilapidated condition of the college road and other academic and infrastructure improvements.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Brig. (Dr.) B.D Mishra (Retd.) congratulated the Higher Education department and Principal GDC Drass for the inauguration of the new building of the hostel block. In his speech he applauded the reforms in the education sector.
LG Mishra while addressing the students emphasized that the relationship of student and teacher is one of learning and teaching and students should thus keep a constructive and open -minded approach to learning. He also seized the opportunity to congratulate the people of Drass on achieving District status recently announced by the MHA.
The annual magazine of GDC Drass ‘Himbabs’ was unveiled by the Chief Guest Lieutenant Governor along with the First Lady and other officers present in the event. He also distributed certificates of appreciation to the meritorious students of the college. Course Certificates to the students of Pickle Making and High Altitude Trekking Skill Centres were also presented by the Chief Guest of the day. Students of GDC Drass presented a welcome song and a Shina dance performance on the occasion.
Principal GDC Drass Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi presented the concluding remarks.
He thanked LG, First Lady, CEC Kargil, DC Kargil and other miscellaneous officers from various departments for their valuable presence at the auspicious occasion and making it a successful one. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Astt Prof. Archo Fatima Nissa.
