Leh, Aug 28: Chairman/CEC of the LAHDC Leh, Adv Tashi Gyalson, underscored the enduring significance of Martyrs Day during an event held at the Martyrs Memorial Park Skyatsags on August 27. The ceremony commemorated the sacrifices made by Ladakhi martyrs in their quest for the region’s current status.
Addressing a diverse audience, including students from Lamdon School, various officials, and community leaders, Gyalson highlighted the immense challenges faced by Ladakh to achieve its present standing. He stressed that the sacrifices of past martyrs should never be forgotten and emphasized the need to inspire the youth with their legacy.
“It is crucial to make the youth aware of these sacrifices to inspire them to achieve great things for Ladakh,” Gyalson said. “Our council is dedicated to honoring past leaders’ legacies and is working towards strengthening the UT and its newly formed districts with a focus on long-term development and progress.”
The Chairman also noted recent constructive dialogues with the apex body, reflecting a shared vision for Ladakh’s future. He urged students to appreciate the sacrifices made for their benefit, as they represent the region’s future.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Dy. Chairman Tsering Angchuk, Executive Councillor for RDD Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, Executive Councillor for Culture Stanzin Chosphel, Nominated Councillor Ven. Konchok Tsepel, former Member of Parliament Thupstan Chhewang, and leaders from various community and religious organizations.
Chering Dorjey Lakrook, President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), praised Gyalson’s efforts and emphasized the need for youth education on the historical significance of Martyrs Day.
The event paid tribute to the courageous contributions of Ladakhi martyrs, including those who lost their lives during the 1989 Ladakh war, such as Nawang Rinchen, Tsering Stobdan, and Tsewang Dorjey, who gave their lives in the struggle for UT status for Ladakh. The contributions of Ven. Lobzang Tsondus and Tashi Angchuk, who perished during the 1981 agitation for Scheduled Tribe status, were also remembered.
