Kargil, Aug 28: The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC), Kargil Unit, has raised concerns over the recent administrative restructuring process that has granted district status to Zanskar and Drass but excluded other deserving regions of Kargil.
In a press release issued today, the Kargil unit of the NC congratulated the people of Zanskar and Drass on receiving separate district status, acknowledging the potential benefits that come with being recognized as independent administrative units.
However, the party emphasized that the restructuring should have been more holistic and inclusive to avoid regional discrimination.
“While the creation of new districts brings abundant opportunities and development, it is imperative that such exercises are carried out without bias,” the NC stated. The party highlighted that despite having a larger population, only two districts have been granted to Kargil out of the three carved from the existing Leh district, leaving the region feeling discriminated against.
The NC particularly pointed out the exclusion of Sanko-Suru and Shakar-Chiktan regions, areas they described as the most deserving of district status. “These regions fulfill all necessary parameters but have been ignored in this restructuring process, leading to a sense of alienation among their residents,” the statement read.
In light of these grievances, the NC is demanding that Sanko-Suru and Shakar-Chiktan be granted separate district status, citing their historical significance as the oldest subdivision and the most populous area of the district.
The demand for equitable administrative recognition is expected to spark further discussions within political circles and among the local populace.
