Leh, Aug 27: In a significant move to address the issue of unemployment in the Union Territory of Ladakh, the local administration has announced the launch of the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) for the financial year 2024-25.
The scheme, which aims to provide credit-linked subsidies to unemployed youth, is expected to create numerous self-employment opportunities and contribute to the economic development of the region.
According to the official notice, the PMEGP scheme is open to individuals aged 18 years and above, with a focus on manufacturing and service sectors. The program offers project costs ranging from Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh, depending on the category. The scheme provides special consideration for marginalized groups, including SC, ST, OBC, women, and ex-servicemen, offering higher subsidy rates of up to 35% for projects in rural areas.
The scheme has been well-received by the local community, with many young people expressing interest in applying for the program. “I am excited about the opportunity to start my own business and create employment for others,” said Tsering Wangmo, a 25-year-old resident of Leh.
“The PMEGP scheme is a great initiative, and I am grateful to the government for providing us with this opportunity.”
The General Manager of the District Industries Centre in Leh will oversee the selection process, considering factors such as experience, qualification, and viability of the proposed projects. Interested candidates can apply online through the KVIC portal until September 21, 2024.
As the region continues to face challenges related to unemployment, the PMEGP scheme is a welcome initiative that is expected to make a positive impact on the lives of the people of Ladakh. With its focus on empowering the youth and promoting self-employment, the scheme is a step in the right direction towards creating a brighter future for the region.
