Leh, Aug 27: The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, observed Martyr’s Day today with deep reverence and solemnity, paying tribute to the courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives for the future of Ladakh.
On this poignant occasion, the LAHDC commemorated the bravery of Sh. Nawang Rinchen (Sankar), Sh. Tsewang Dorjay (Saboo), and Sh. Tsering Stobdan (Durbuk), who laid down their lives on August 27, 1989, during the mass agitation demanding Union Territory status for Ladakh. Their selfless sacrifice remains a beacon of inspiration for the region’s ongoing pursuit of dignity and self-determination.
The ceremony also honored the memory of Ven. Lobzang Tsondus (Likir Gonpa) and Sh. Tashi Angchuk (Saspol), who gave their lives on January 24, 1981, in the struggle for the grant of Scheduled Tribe status to Ladakh. Their contributions were instrumental in shaping the socio-political landscape of the region.
“Today, as we reflect on their immense sacrifices, we reaffirm our commitment to the vision they held for Ladakh—a vision grounded in respect, unity, and progress,” said a representative of the LAHDC. “Let their legacy guide us as we continue to build the Ladakh they dreamed of, with unwavering dedication and honor.”
The Martyr’s Day observance serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that have paved the way for Ladakh’s growth and development. The council’s tribute underscores a collective resolve to uphold the values and aspirations that these martyrs championed.
