Leh, Aug 06: Amidst growing tensions between local and non-local transporters in Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Ladakh, has assured that the rights of all transporters will be safeguarded. This assurance comes in the wake of recent incidents involving the forcible unloading of non-local trucks by members of the local Truck Union, leading to increased security measures and disputes.

The tensions began when non-local transporters, who hold All India permits, reported that their trucks, essential for transporting materials needed for mobile tower installations in the region, were forcibly unloaded by local transporters. The local Truck Union reportedly transferred the cargo to local trucks, claiming this measure was to provide local transporters with the opportunity to carry construction materials to more remote parts of Ladakh.

In response to these developments, a delegation from the All Ladakh Transporters Association (ALTA) met with the LG, the Deputy Commissioner of Leh, and the Senior Superintendent of Police of Leh on Tuesday. During the meeting, ALTA Chairman Dorje Angchuk expressed concerns about recent directives from Ladakh Police authorities to withdraw their personnel from checkpoints across Leh. Angchuk requested that their personnel be reinstated to ensure the smooth operation of transportation activities.

The LG emphasized the administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and assured that trucks with valid national permits would not face any obstruction in their operations within Ladakh. He stressed that maintaining lawful and equitable operations is crucial, particularly in the context of ongoing infrastructure development projects that are vital for Ladakh’s connectivity and economic growth. The LG reiterated that these projects require a balanced approach that respects the rights of all stakeholders involved.

Furthermore, the incidents have attracted attention from the Indian Army and local authorities, who have highlighted the need for a clear and enforceable framework to manage the transportation of goods in the region. The aim is to ensure that infrastructure development proceeds smoothly while respecting the legal and operational rights of non-local transporters.

As the situation continues to unfold, the LG’s assurances and the ongoing dialogue between local and non-local transporters will be crucial in resolving these disputes and ensuring that infrastructure projects are completed without further disruptions.
