Leh, Aug 01: As the monsoon season heightens the challenges of cleanliness and sanitation, the Municipal Committee Leh has launched the “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao” initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0. This initiative, spanning from August 1 to August 31, 2024, aims to enhance the preparedness of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to tackle the cleanliness and health challenges associated with the monsoon.

The onset of the monsoon season increases the prevalence of waterborne and vector-borne diseases, necessitating proactive measures to mitigate health risks. Recognizing this critical need, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has introduced the Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao (SABB) campaign, which calls for comprehensive interventions focused on cleanliness, advocacy, and inter-departmental convergence to be implemented by all Municipal Committees in Leh.

The key elements of the campaign will include special cleanliness drives, collection and transportation of waste, regular cleaning of all community and public toilets, sanitation and hygiene facilities for children, adequate sampling of water quality, supply of safe drinking water, maintenance of water works and planning for IEC and door-to-door mobilization.

The month-long activities will feature events aimed at visibly improving cleanliness, training local communities and officials on water management and sanitation, and raising awareness about the care and needs of sanitation workers. The initiative will also engage local NGOs, community groups, and the private sector to reinforce hygiene messages, with a strong focus on community involvement and public education.
