Leh, July 08: In a significant move aimed at advancing the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities, the Union Territory (UT) Administration of Ladakh has commenced the application process for the prestigious position of Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. This decision underscores the administration’s strong commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment across the region.
Under the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) Act 2016 and the newly enacted Ladakh Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2024, the Commissioner will play a pivotal role in overseeing the implementation of policies and initiatives designed to safeguard and promote the rights of persons with disabilities. The appointed Commissioner will serve a term of three years from the date of assuming office, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term, subject to age restrictions.
Tashi Dolma, Director of Social and Tribal Welfare in Ladakh, emphasized the pivotal nature of this appointment, highlighting its aim to enhance accessibility standards across government infrastructures, educational institutions, and public facilities to better accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities.
