POWERGRID donates Water Tanker to GDC Kargil under CSR initiative

Kargil, July 05: The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has handed over a truck-mounted water tanker with a 9 kL capacity to the Government Degree College, Kargil, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The handover ceremony took place today, with Shri Rajesh Kumar, Executive Director (Northern Region-II) of POWERGRID, presenting the tanker to Sh. Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, IAS, District Development Commissioner, Kargil.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Jaffer Akhoon, Chief Executive Councilor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, along with senior officials from POWERGRID, Kargil District administration, and the staff and students of the Government Degree College, Kargil. The tanker, valued at approximately ₹29.59 Lacs, addresses the college’s critical need for a permanent water supply.

The Government Degree College, Kargil, with over 3000 students enrolled in various undergraduate programs, had been facing significant challenges due to inadequate water supply. The issue was escalated to the District Magistrate, Kargil, who sought POWERGRID’s assistance. Following this request, an MoU was signed, culminating in the formal handover of the water tanker today.

This initiative is part of POWERGRID’s ongoing efforts to support educational infrastructure development in the Union Territory of Ladakh. To date, POWERGRID has invested approximately ₹3 crores in various CSR projects across the region.

On the occasion, CEC Kargil, DC Kargil, and the Principal of Government Degree College, Kargil, expressed their gratitude to POWERGRID for its substantial contribution. They highlighted the significant impact this initiative will have on the students and staff of the college.

The corporation operates 177,790 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines, 278 substations, and boasts a transformation capacity exceeding 527,946 MVA. The Northern Region-II of POWERGRID, headquartered in Jammu, serves the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, parts of Haryana, and the Union Territories of Chandigarh, Ladakh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Through continuous support and development activities, POWERGRID aims to enhance the quality of life and infrastructure in these regions.
