Kargil, June 30: In a pioneering initiative aimed at nurturing wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism in the Drass valley, the Himalayan Brown Bear Trust, supported by Royal Enfield, has successfully concluded a 10-day nature guide training program. The program, held in collaboration with Roots Ladakh, the Department of Wildlife, the Department of Tourism Kargil, WANT Drass, Drenmo Lodge, and Flame of the Forest Safari Lodge, brought together 15 young participants from diverse backgrounds across Drass and Kargil.

The intensive training, conducted at scenic locations in Drass, focused on equipping the youth with essential skills and knowledge crucial for promoting responsible tourism and safeguarding biodiversity. Participants engaged in comprehensive sessions covering the region’s rich history, cultural heritage, and unique biodiversity. Practical workshops on wildlife photography, basic first aid, effective communication, and storytelling were also integral to the curriculum.

“This program not only imparted valuable knowledge but also aimed to inspire these young individuals to become independent entrepreneurs and ethical leaders in wildlife tourism,” remarked Muzammil Hussain, Founder Trustee of the Himalayan Brown Bear Trust. Expert speakers were invited to motivate and guide the participants, emphasizing their role as future ambassadors for conservation in the Drass valley.

As a symbol of their preparedness to embark on their new roles, each participant received a Nature Guide starter pack, generously provided by the organizers. The packs included essential tools such as binoculars, field guides, bags, jackets, and caps.

Speaking on the success of the initiative, Muzammil Hussain highlighted, “This first-ever guide training program marks a significant milestone in our mission to empower local youth and foster a deep appreciation for nature while safeguarding our natural heritage.”

The program’s conclusion sets a high standard for future initiatives in promoting sustainable tourism and conservation efforts in Kargil. It is anticipated that these newly trained guides will play a pivotal role in enhancing visitor experiences while ensuring the preservation of the region’s ecological balance.
