Leh, June 26: The Health Department conducted a significant awareness session on de-addiction as part of the School Health Education program, under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) and the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), at Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, Leh.

Dr. Stanzin Jamyang, District NTCP Consultant, led the session with a comprehensive presentation focused on the dangers of smoking and its direct correlation to lung cancer. He detailed the stages and symptoms of lung cancer, emphasizing the severe health risks associated with tobacco use. Dr. Jamyang also underscored smoking as a potential gateway to broader drug addiction issues, highlighting the importance of early intervention and prevention strategies.

Phuntsok Diskit, NTCP Psychologist at SNM Hospital, Leh, addressed the complex nature of addiction cycles. She emphasized how initial curiosity about substances like “cool lip” can swiftly lead to addiction, despite regulatory bans. Diskit stressed the role of mobile counseling services in facilitating de-addiction efforts and encouraged students to steer clear of smoking and drugs.

Jigmet Angmo, Clinical Psychologist at SNM Hospital, Leh, delved into the psychological impacts of drug abuse. She discussed identity crises among youth and the neurological effects of substance abuse, particularly the release of dopamine and the challenges of dependency. Angmo highlighted the critical need for comprehensive and sustained treatment approaches, warning against the severe consequences of incomplete rehabilitation.

Counsellor Deachen Angmo Paldan from Tele-MANAS, UT Ladakh, introduced students to tele-mental health support services available through Tele-MANAS. Paldan elaborated on how these services provide accessible mental health assistance, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help when needed.

The event, attended by the Principal of Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, teachers, medical officials, and students, marked a concerted effort by the Health Department to promote awareness and preventive measures against addiction among the youth. The interactive session provided valuable insights into the health risks associated with substance abuse, aiming to empower students with knowledge and strategies to make informed choices for their well-being.

As part of ongoing initiatives under the NMHP and NTCP, such sessions are pivotal in fostering a healthier and more resilient community in Leh, ensuring that young people are equipped to avoid the pitfalls of addiction and lead fulfilling lives.
