Leh, June 26: In a proactive move aimed at bolstering pasture development and supporting the livelihoods of pashmina herders in Nyoma sub-division, Joint Director of the Sheep Husbandry Department, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, accompanied by District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO) Leh, Dr. Tsewang Morup, conducted a comprehensive inspection tour today.

The visit encompassed several Sheep Extension Centers (SECs) including Hanley, Kuyul, Dongtee, and Rongo, where the officials engaged closely with the local pashmina herder community. Highlighting the department’s commitment to sustainable agriculture practices, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain ceremonially handed over a solarized lift irrigation pump. This initiative aims to enhance fodder availability by facilitating efficient irrigation methods, crucial for supporting livestock in the region.

“The introduction of the solarized lift irrigation pump represents a significant step towards optimizing water usage and ensuring a reliable feed source for herders and their livestock,” stated Dr. Iftikhar Hussain during the interaction. He emphasized the importance of such technological interventions in fostering sustainable pastoral practices amidst challenging environmental conditions.

Dr. Tsewang Morup, along with Additional District Sheep Husbandry Officer (AD), Nyoma, elaborated on various ongoing initiatives and educational programs aimed at empowering the local herder community. The officials underscored the role of modern agricultural techniques in mitigating environmental stress while bolstering economic resilience among pashmina herders.

The visit concluded with positive feedback from the herder community, who expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the solarized lift irrigation pump in ensuring long-term sustainability and growth in the region’s pastoral economy.
