Mumbai, Dec 26 (PTI): Equity benchmark indices climbed on Tuesday amid mixed trends from Asian markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 229.84 points or 0.32 per cent to close at 71,336.80. The Nifty50 index sustained its positive trend throughout the day after a flat start. It ended the day on a positive note for the third straight session. The index settled at 21,441.35, up 91.95 points or 0.43 per cent.
The Nifty Bank index that tracks the banking sector comprising of 12 banking stocks, added 233 points or 0.49 per cent to finish the session at 47,724.85.
Among the Sensex firms, NTPC, M&M, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Wipro, Asian Paints, Airtel Power Grid, Titan and HDFC Bank were the major gainers. Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Infosys, TCS and Tata Motors were the laggards.
Earlier on Friday, the BSE benchmark climbed 241.86 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 71,106.96. The Nifty went up by 94.35 points or 0.44 per cent to 21,349.40. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,828.94 crore, according to exchange data. Equity markets were closed on Monday for Christmas.
