Leh, Dec 07: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Leh celebrated World Soil Day at its Stakna campus. This year’s theme was “Soil and Water: A Source of Life”. About 25 farmers of Matho were present on the occasion.
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh, Professor and Head, KVK Leh gave a detailed lecture about the importance of soil in agriculture. He informed the farmers how a mere wrong intervention of a human can deteriorate the whole diversity of soil thus he insisted farmers to practice scientific know-how for protection of not just the above ground biodiversity but also those living under the soil.
He stressed farmers to conserve water and suggested adopting various technologies like micro irrigation for the same. Dr Sabiya Asmat, SMS Home Science and Jigmet Laskit also spoke on the occasion.
World soil day is celebrated as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. In the face of climate change and unnecessary human intervention our soils are being degraded putting excessive pressure on our water resources thus this day aims to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable agriculture.
