Leh, Sept 05: The first-ever Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt of India, New Delhi sponsored MRDP Project awarded to the University of Ladakh was kick-started with formal inauguration, here today.
For the inauguration ceremony, Prof. S K Mehta, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, has invited a few internationally recognized Earth science scientists to the Ladakh territory.
The MRDP project has been awarded to Dr. Riyaz M. K. Khan, Expert Faculty, Department of Geology, to study the past climatic changes and its effect on global climate, especially Trans- Himalayan Ladakh. Considering the terrain’s geological characteristics, multiple proxies will be used to study climate change over parts of Ladakh. An MoU has been signed with various Earth science organisations like CSIR-NGRI, Hyderabad; WIHG, Dehradun; and understanding with IUAC, New Delhi, to conduct laboratory work and analysis. Further, to strengthen the MRDP team, a high-level selection team selected two nationally qualified JRFs, Ms. Stanzin Angmo and Mr. Sourav Kumar Karn, to carry out the project-related scientific work.
The MRDP team, assisted by Dr. Bhupendra S Yadav and Dr. Ibrahim Yousuf, Assistant Professors, Department of Geology, visited the Chumathang region of Ladakh with the invited scientists on the 3rd and 4th of September 2023. The team selected a few locations and decided to commence detailed work shortly after making preparatory work.
