LEH: One of the most respected cops in Jammu and Kashmir, S D Singh Jamwal today assumed the charge of the head of Police force in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

An old Ladakh hand who served in the region early on in his career, Jamwal was Additional Director General of Police (Security) in Jammu and Kashmir before his transfer to Ladakh. Even years after serving as SSP in Leh, Jamwal his continued interest in Ladakh by way of his writings.

 

According to an official communique, “Dr Shiv Darshan Singh Jamwal-IPS, a 1995 Batch IPS officer  joined Ladakh Police as “Head of Police” U.T of Ladakh and assumed the charge  of the office of  Head of Ladakh Police on Monday. A warm welcome was accorded by all the officers of Ladakh Police Headquarters followed by Guard of Honour at Police Headquarters, Ladakh Leh.  Dr. S.D Singh Jamwal-IPS relieved Satish Khandare-IPS, who served in Ladakh Police for three years and nine months and successfully established Ladakh Police after bifurcation of newly created U.T of Ladakh from erstwhile J&K State.”

One of highly decorated Police officers in Jammu and Kashmir, Jamwal is widely regarded as a scholar cop for his well established interest in research and scholarship. He written a number of widely acclaimed books, papers and monographs on security and strategic affairs.

During his earlier stint as SSP Leh, Jamwal enjoys wide respect as a friend of Ladakh. He has written extensively on life and culture in Ladakh.

His book “Ladakh: Travel-History-Culture”, is perhaps the first comprehensive book of its kind on Ladakh which has detailed information about various aspects of Ladakh- Tourism, Land, People, Heritage, Art, culture as well as wild life etc.

Not only it has all the information which would interest a tourist who wants to visit Ladakh like places to see, accommodation and transport available along with their charges etc but all the details about unique culture and history of Ladakh. The book includes a special chapter on Monasteries of Ladakh.

Details of about 30 Monastries of Ladakh have been given in the book which even includes their architectural plan and various paintings, frescos and statues present in these rooms as well as their explanation. Similarly, details about different types of Stupas or Chortens found in Ladakh have been given. The book has a special mention of “Rock Art” of Ladakh which is in the form of unique rock carvings, which have been discovered in Ladakh by the two authors.
