MUMBAI: Mumbai City FC, the winners of the Indian Super League Shield, have announced a three-year contract extension with goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, securing his services until 2026.

Lachenpa, who joined Mumbai City FC in 2020 after being named the Best Goalkeeper of the I-League 2019 while playing for Real Kashmir, expressed his gratitude towards the club for their support and belief in him.

“This club has backed me, encouraged me and gave me the freedom to express myself. I want to continue to work hard for all the staff, the management, the fans and I want to repay the trust Des Buckingham has put in me,” said Lachenpa in a club statement.

MCFC head coach Des Buckingham praised Lachenpa’s breakout season and highlighted his talent and dedication.

“Phurba had a good breakout season after waiting so long for his opportunity. He is a young and talented goalkeeper who has shown his qualities in numerous games last season. He is a humble and extremely hard working player that has progressed his overall game well in the last 12 months,” said Buckingham.

Lachenpa had a notable performance in the Indian Super League semi-final of the 2020-21 season when he came off the bench in the penalty shootout against FC Goa, helping Mumbai City FC secure a spot in their first-ever final in the competition.

He also featured in five out of the six matches for Mumbai City FC in the AFC Champions League and became a regular starter for the club in the ISL. Lachenpa was even named the Man-of-the-Match on one occasion during the club’s Champions League campaign.
