LEH: Despite taking numerous initiatives to maintain cleanliness across the twin districts of union territory of Ladakh, there seems to be a dire need to upgrade and intensify the aforementioned campaign amid several reasons.

Known for its picturesque landscapes and breathtaking beauty, Ladakh UT has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. However, due to the increasing number of visitors, the need for maintaining cleanliness in this region has become even more crucial.

The region is renowned for its stunning mountains, pristine lakes, and magnificent valleys. However, indiscriminate littering and improper waste disposal practices can mar the natural beauty of the place, said one of the residents and added that not only does garbage create an eyesore, but it also leads to environmental degradation. It is vital to maintain the cleanliness of Ladakh to protect its fragile ecosystem and ensure its sustainability for future generations.

“Keeping Ladakh clean is essential for the health and well-being of its inhabitants and the thousands of tourists that visit each year. Improper handling of waste can lead to the spread of diseases and pose a threat to public health, besides being dangerous for fragile climate,” he said.

Another resident while speaking to The Earth News said that with an improper waste management system in place in certain areas, the region has become vulnerable to the outbreak of epidemics. By promoting cleanliness and proper waste disposal practices, we need to create a healthy and safe environment for us and the visitors.

It is pertinent to mention here that Tourism plays a significant role in the economy of Ladakh. The region attracts tourists from all over the world, who flock to experience its unique culture, serene landscapes, and adventurous activities. However, a lack of cleanliness tends to tarnish the image of Ladakh UT as a tourist destination. Word spreads quickly, and negative reviews regarding cleanliness can deter potential visitors. On the other hand, a clean and well-maintained environment can help in attracting more tourists, boosting the local economy, and providing livelihood opportunities for the people of Ladakh.

The government and the civil society from time to time across Kargil and Leh districts of the UT have been carrying out cleanliness drives and run related campaigns. The government, local authorities, and community organizations have been working together to develop and implement effective cleanliness initiatives.

The resident further suggested that to ensure cleanliness in Ladakh UT, it is essential to develop robust waste management systems that should include setting up waste collection centers, recycling facilities, and educating the locals and visitors about the importance of proper waste disposal.
