JAMMU: With preparations almost in full swing to declare the commissioning of the Jammu All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) coming up at Vijaypur in Samba district likely in the month of October this year, the government is considering the expansion of Vijaypur Railway Station and Metro Rail project from Bari Brahmana to the health institution with a motive to facilitate smooth connectivity of patients and attendants to avail the facility.

Official sources said that in order to facilitate the travel of patients to AIIMS, the Jammu AIIMS authorities have sought expansion of the Vijaypur railway station along with extension of metro project from Bari Brahmana to Vijaypur.

“The AIIMS authorities have dashed a communiqué to the Ministry of Railways and the Union Ministry Health Ministry to keep the proposal under consideration so that maximum people can avail the facility especially the patients travelling from outside the Jammu and Kashmir or other parts of the Union Territory,” they added.

On the commencement of AIIMS, the people of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir apart from Punjab (areas connected with Pathankot) and Himachal Pradesh will directly get medical benefits, they said and added, “the distance of AIIMS from Vijaypur railway station is about three km but presently only limited trains are halting at this station, which is going to be one of the major stoppages after the commissioning of the AIIMS.”

“A letter has been dashed to the Railways Ministry and Union Health Ministry seeking expansion of Vijaypur railway station and halts of maximum trains going towards Jammu or towards Pathankot,” they said.

Sources revealed that it will facilitate the passengers particularly the patients to safely reach Jammu AIIMS without any hiccups and they will heave a sigh of relief.

“It is expected that both the ministries will take up the matter seriously and initiate the requisition before the commencement of the AIIMS,” adding, “similarly, extension of metro rail project from Bari Brahmana to Vijaypur will be of great boon for the patients.”

“A four-way highway road is being constructed to connect the North and South campuses of AIIMS for vehicles and pedestrians,” the official added.

The Jammu AIIMS, likely to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October this year, will become operational with 50 departments established in 42 blocks.
