Wakha molestation case: Kargil observes complete shutdown

LEH: Underlining the resentment and anguish against the alleged incident of molestation and attempt to rape here, Kargil town observed a complete shutdown on Sunday, even as the protesters demanded from Lieutenant Governor Brigadier B D Mishra to intervene in the matter.

The incident occurred in Wakha where a woman alleged that she was physically molested by one Tsering Angdose (Onpo) at Mulbek mohalla, Kurtan Kalaksa after she had visited him for the treatment of her headache.

The woman alleged that the alleged accused tried to rape her after locking the door.

On Saturday, Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil had given the call for the shutdown to be observed on Sunday.

The support from general public, traders, political and religious organisations and civil society was visible, as all business establishments, shops, and restaurants throughout Kargil district remained shut for the entire day, with anger simmering among the people of Kargil and strong condemnation pouring in from all parts of the Ladakh union territory.

At a press conference, Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil chief expressed his gratitude to the people of Kargil for the successful shutdown, while demanding stringent action against the accused who is already in police custody.
The chief demanded the constitution of an SIT to investigate the case on priority, and demanded intervention of Lieutenant Governor B D Mishra in the matter and ensure transparency over it.

Meanwhile, Police on Saturday said that an impartial investigation is underway in the Wakha incident.

“The investigations in the Wakha incident are underway and are done very professionally. Being a sensitive case the police have to take extra care so that the investigations are not hindered besides the victim who is a girl does not face any inconvenience ” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kargil Anayat Ali Chowdhury said.

A Case vide FIR 08/2023 U/S 354A, 354B, 376/511,506 IPC, 342 was registered at Police Station Wakha. During the course of investigation, the accused was immediately arrested and produced before for police remand. Accused has been taken in police remand for nine days, the SSP said.

“We have got some evidence where the accused has been found guilty. We have arrested the accused and  under nine days police remand,” he said.

The SSP urged the people of Kargil not to pay heed to rumours, adding that the case will be taken to its conclusions with the punishment to the accused.
