Killer Roads: Around 200 killed in 1800 accidents in J&K in 4 months

JAMMU: While the administration is taking several measures to control the road accidents for which strategies are also into pipeline with the help of police department as a key resource agency besides other wings but despite that this year from January to April, nearly 200 people lost their lives in more than 1800 road accidents reported across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu, however, reported 376 accidents with highest 65 casualties and approximately 400 injuries.

Official sources said that the government has been working on various projects and schemes to prevent road accidents, but the implementation of the steps taken vis-a-vis the decisions, are not visible on the ground.

On an average, sources said that 12 fatal road accidents are taking place every day in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, adding, “there were 1812 road accidents reported from across the UT between January to April this year in which around 200 people were killed and 2350 people were injured.”

The Jammu district reported the highest 376 road accidents in which 65 people were killed and 400 were injured followed by Udhampur district with 147 road accidents while Srinagar and Kathua districts reported 143 accidents.

As per the traffic department figures, in this period, 4,29,220 drivers were fined for violating rules while 86,000 court challans were presented and compound challans were issued to 4.28 lakh drivers.

“Mobile phone use while driving, jumping red lights, overloading are few reasons that cause accidents,” they added and said that apart from the police department, it is also the responsibility of every citizen to follow the rules to prevent accidents.

“No doubt, crackdown on rash and stunt driving is also the need of the hour as youth is becoming the victim of these road accidents,” the official added.

Sharing the figures, he said that from January to April this year, in Jammu, 376 accidents took place with 65 deaths and 400 injuries, in Kathua, 143 accidents were reported in which 36 people were killed and 225 sustained injuries, in Udhampur, 14 people were killed in 147 accidents and 244 injured, in Samba, in 100 accidents, 17 people were killed and 107 were injured, in Reasi district, 119 accidents were reported in which 18 people lost their lives and 115 were injured, in Srinagar, 143 accidents claimed 18 lives and 129 injured, in Anantnag, 90 accidents were reported in which 15 people were killed and 123 were injured and in Baramulla, eight people were killed in 65 accidents and 90 suffered injuries.
