Several delegations meet LG, raise issues

LEH: A number of delegations from Leh and Kargil called on Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas and apprised him of their problems.

A delegation comprising members of Ladakh Vipassana Centre led by D Bhave and Col Sonam Wangchuk (Retd) informed the LG about the various vipassana meditation courses introduced by them at the Centre in Saboo.

He also informed about two projects initiated by them- one for the youth and another for the elderly people. He further informed about the introduction of vipassana meditation courses at many schools in Maharashtra.

Bhave informed about their plan to conduct 10-day vipassana meditation courses for government AND private teachers and government officials and requested for LG’s assistance in this regard. He also informed that students from Lamdol Model Senior Secondary School will also take part in the course.

Vice-President, Athletic Association of Ladakh, Tsering Sangrup, informed LG about the recent formation of the Association with renowned athlete Rigzen Angmo as its president. He also informed about the plan of the Association to organise an athletic meet to identify talented athletes from Ladakh so that they could be selected and sent for training for various national events. He requested for assistance for the procurement of equipment for organising the said event.

LG instructed Secretary Ravinder Kumar to look into the matter and provide all possible support in this regard.

Spalzes Angmo, a hotelier from Leh informed that there are four hotels in the main Leh market, including hers. She also informed about the issues faced by them by the Traffic Police in picking up and dropping off tourists from their hotels.

SP Traffic, Mujeeb Ur Rehman, who was also present in the meeting, informed LG about the efforts made by them to ensure there is no traffic congestion, especially in the Leh main market area. He further informed that the Traffic Police give the hoteliers enough time for picking up and dropping off tourists.

LG instructed that traffic law should be strictly followed by everyone.

He also instructed that no space should be reserved/blocked/segregated for VIPs. He further instructed to take stringent action against Traffic Police personnel found engaged in using foul language and harassing the public.

LG instructed that there should be no inconvenience to the tourists.

Various delegations from Kargil also met Lt Governor.

Councillor, Mini-Baroo, Ghulam Mehdi raised several issues about his constituency, viz. the upgradation of Government High School Minjee to Govt Higher Secondary School; the need to construct subways near schools affected by the construction of the Kargil-Zanskar National Highway for the safety of students; the need to establish a Medical Sub-Centre at Gramthang along with the appointment of doctors for NTPHC Baroo and NTPHC Minjee; the remodelling and repairing of the existing irrigation canals at Titichumik Gongyur and Baroo Tsok-khul, etc.

Bilal Ahmed, a resident of Hulail Drass, informed LG that his late father, Ghulam Rasool, who was serving at PDD Ladakh, passed away in 2021. He also informed that he is the sole bread earner of the family after the death of his father. He further informed LG that he is unemployed and is currently working as a labourer.

Bilal requested LG’s intervention in clearing his requisition for a job on compassionate grounds under SRO 43.

LG assured to look into the matter and stated that priority will be given based on the case.

Mohammad Hasnain, a resident of Faroona in Kargil, informed that he is currently working as a driver on a meagre salary. He also informed about his plan to construct a house in the village. He requested housing assistance under the Bosmeti Goyogs scheme.

LG instructed Ravinder Kumar, IAS, to check if Hasnain’s name has been included in the list of beneficiaries for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme.

A delegation comprising members of the Parents Association of Delhi Public School Leh informed about efforts made by the parents of students studying at DPS Leh to improve the education standard at the school.

It raised several issues related to the school, viz. the need for a local principal, the creation of a School Management Committee with the inclusion of a few parents; winter-friendly classrooms at the school for the convenience of students; the absence of annual day celebration from school, the need to encourage the teaching of Bhoti/Urdu at the school and the need for adherence to CBSE norms by the school, etc.

A delegation of the Student Union University of Ladakh led by Dorjay Namgyal raised several issues related to students of UoL, including the recognition of BEd and BPEd courses by the concerned body; the need to develop infrastructure at the UoL Campus in Leh; the need to look into the fee structure of UoL; the need to subsidise the rates of bus along with the need to provide additional buses for students; the need for Wi-Fi facilities at UoL Campus; the need to relocate the library at the central location for the convenience of students; fair and transparent recruitment of faculty and non-teaching staff for the University, etc.
