LEH: On Wednesday afternoon, a special call was made from Ladakh Raj Niwas to Rajasthan Raj Bhavan. On this side of the line was Lieutenant Governor Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra sitting in Leh. On the other side in Jaipur was Kalraj Mishra, Governor of Rajasthan.
The subject of their conversation was the denial of degrees to over 50 students from Ladakh by a Rajasthan university. The six-minute phone call ended on a positive note, bringing much cheers to the students, as Kalraj Mishra assured B D Mishra that he will take up the matter with the university and will provide all possible supports in the matter.
A delegation comprising students led by Lobzang Spaldan had called on Mishra, in the presence of Commissioner Secretary, Padma Angmo.
The LG was informed that as many as 54 students from Ladakh who graduated from Suresh Gyan Vihar University in Jaipur, Rajasthan have been denied the the degree and migration certificates by the University on the ground that the University did not receive money under Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) as the University is not eligible to receive funds under PMSSS by AICTE.
The students were enrolled in a number of courses in the university and had passed out in the year 2018 and 2019.
“The University had asked the students to pay the due amount for the issuance of the degree and migration certificates. Despite persistent efforts, they are unable to get their certificates from the University to date,” the LG was informed.
Padma Angmo informed HLG that provisional certificates have been issued to students after taking up the matter with the concerned officials of the University so that the students do not face any problems in applying for jobs or seeking admission to other universities for higher studies.
“Mishra discussed the matter with the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Rajasthan, Kalraj Mishra and requested for support in this matter. The Hon’ble LG Rajasthan assured that he will take up the matter with the university,” said an official handout.
It may be mentioned that the issue has been long-pending and a controversy had erupted in January this year, after a rumour said that these students will be disqualified by SSC without degrees.
Following this Angmo had intervened, and clarified that the provisional degrees are valid for applying for various jobs including the recruitment conducted by the Staff Service Commission (SSC) as well as for taking up further higher studies.
“We have approached the ministry of education and the university to resolve the matter and get these students the final degrees. Even if Ladakh administration is asked to pay for the students to the university by the ministry of education, we are ready. These students will definitely get their final degrees,” she had maintained.
