Kargil: The authorities on Wednesday asked the people in Kargil to register their dogs or face action.

“All the pet/dog owners are hereby informed to register their pets in the office of the Municipal Committee Kargil within 7 days from the issuance of this notice failing which necessary action under rules shall be taken against the owner,” said a notice issued by the Municipal Committee Kargil.

It also asked the public to contact them if they found any dog experiencing illness and violent behavior in the Municipal Limit of Kargil.

The helpline Numbers are 9419537643 and 9469529020.

The notices have come day after the District administration Kargil decided to launch a mass sterilisation drive for dogs in the district.

Pertinently, taking cognisance of the exponential increase in the cases of dog bites in the union territory, the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh earlier this month had issued notices to the Ladakh administration. It was brought to the notice of Chief Justice that the registered dog bite cases in Ladakh have exponentially increased from 854 in 2017 to 2229 in 2022. Around 220 people were reportedly bitten by dogs in January, 2023 alone.

It may be mentioned here that an elderly woman was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in Rantaksha Zanskar area of the Kargil district last month.

Tsering Kunzess, aged 79, wife of Late Tashi Tundup was attacked and killed while she was outside her home on the morning of March 25.

Following the incident, the Department of Animal and Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries had issued an advisory for the general public asking people to carry a stick while going out and exercising caution while approaching a stray dog.
