New Delhi: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has given a target to the airports to achieve 100 per cent use of Green Energy by 2024 and net zero by 2030. Cochin Airport is the first green airport in the world which is completely powered by solar energy.
Apart from Cochin, Mumbai and 25 other AAI Airports are consuming 100 per cent green energy. While Delhi and Mumbai airports are the two major airports in the country, have achieved the highest level of 4+ Carbon Accreditation of ACI.
According to AAI officials, the authority has given targets to achieve 100 per cent green energy at its remaining operational airports by 2024.
The 25 airports which have been given a target include Shimla, Kullu, Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Imphal, Pakyong, Pantnagar, Dehradun, Dimapur, Jalgaon, Puducherry, Gondia, Sholapur, etc.
The Airports Council International (ACI) has started the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, which is a global standard for carbon management at airports. This programme assists the airports in asses their emission and reducing their carbon footprints.
AAI is also buying around 53 million units of solar energy through open access and green power tariff, thus enhancing Renewable Energy (RE) sharing.
