PRESS TRUST OF INDIA North Korea Dec 17| 15: Kim Jong-un has warned America it faces “unimaginable consequences” over sanctions against North Korea. A government statement published following fresh sanctions against the dictatorship over its arms development programme warns America such actions would only “only heighten the spirit of self-reliance”. The statement, reported by Pyongyang’s state Korean Central News Agency urged the US to reach a peace treaty with North Korea . It said: “If the US persistently pursues its anachronistic hostile policy toward the DPRK (North Korea) this way, this would only entail unimaginable consequences quite contrary to what the US desires. It added sanctions would “only heighten the spirit of selfreliance and increase the strenuous efforts”. Last week, the North Korean dictator said the country was ‘ready to detonate’ a hydrogen bomb in the state’s most chilling nuclear weapon threat. He said his late father and former leader Kim Jong-Il, “turned the DPRK into a powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate a self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty and the dignity of the nation.” It is the first time he has claimed the country has an H-bomb and if true, it would mark a major advance in North Korea’s nuclear weapons capabilities. North Korea carried out tests on nuclear devices in 2006, 2009 and 2013 and is currently under United Nations sanctions banning trade and financing activities that aid its weapons programme. A hydrogen bomb, also known as a thermonuclear bomb, uses fusion technology and is the most powerful known weapon on earth – far more powerful than an atomic bomb. South Korea’s intelligence agency has said there was no evidence to support the claim.
