Tribal Research Institute, Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh on Thursday organized several programs as part of celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas-cum-Tribal Week which started on November 15 and will conclude on November 19, 2022.
On Thursday (17 November), a series of events such as workshop on research methodology, tribal food fest, artifact display and cultural programme were performed.
The event was commenced with the presentation of traditional khataks to worthy chief guest Aga Syed Jamal, District Social & Tribal Welfare Officer, Kargil and guest of honour, Sushil Kumar, Principal Jawahar Navodaya Vidhalaya, Kargil as a token of honour.
This was followed by a welcome address delivered by programme coordinator Dr. Jaffar Ali Khan, Department of Sociology/Tribal Research Institute, Kargil Campus, UoL.
In his welcome address, Dr Jaffar underscored the policy significance of Tribal Research Institute to keep alive the cultural legacy and traditions of tribes of Ladakh. He also threw light on major challenges faced by tribal communities and their struggle to achieve milestones since independence.
Subsequent to this, two speeches were delivered by Khairun Nissa (MA-II) and Zahara Banoo (MA-I) students of Department of Sociology on the themes “Importance of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas” and “Munshi Abdul Sattar, a lone freedom fighter from Ladakh” respectively.
This was followed by the address Sushil Kumar who underlined the importance of celebration of Janjatia Gaurav Diwas to reconnect the younger generation with their cultural roots which otherwise faded with the blows of modernity and westernization.
This was followed by the address of Aga Syed Jamal who narrated the story of constant struggle to achieve milestone of getting scheduled tribes status to eight major tribal groups. He also stressed on covering a long way via developing entrepreneurship skills among tribal folks, exhibitions of tribal artifacts and food.
Resource persons of two-day workshop on “Basic Research Methodology” were also awarded certificates of presentation.
Afterwards, vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Mohd. Taqi, Media and Publicity Cell, Kargil Campus, UoL.
He expressed sincere gratitude to the chief guest and guest of honour for sparing their valuable time out of their busy schedule. He also expressed thanks to all media houses for wider coverage of the event. He also appreciated the participants and non-teaching staff members for making this event successful.
He also expressed sincere gratitude to Prof. S.K. Mehta, Vice Chancellor, UoL and Kaneez Fatima, Rector, Kargil Campus, UoL for providing technical and logistic support for the event. At last, he applauded the students and other participants for their attentive and patient listening.
After the conclusion of first phase of programme, bouquets of other events like Tribal Food Fest, Artifact presence of chief guest. A list of artefact including Zerboo, Bamba, Astaba, Phang, Phangkuche, Bramgmi Thakpa, rTun, sKya, Chelim Pesta, Alche, sLakpa, Huser, Smawar, Karee, Skyonchey, lDuru, Yakpa, Shok, Thawoo, Mour, Zhu and Dha were part of exhibition.
Simultaneously, cultural programme was staged with the performances like Lastot Thonmo (Ladakhi Dance), Baitja Ful Chik (Balti song), Barbe Sta-Dangs (Balti song), Tu Jo Hums (Shina), Shing-Jzoks (Leh song), Baba Latifa (Leh song), Zangla Zangla (Zanskar song), Zambuling (Changthang song), Ladakhi Fusion and Ali Yat.
Tribal cuisine on display includes Chuli Taki Khambir, Rsab-Khur, Popoth, Yhos-Stanma (Mix), Lumbo (Skambo, Mulaq), Oma, Zerchung, Markhur, Halwa-Chapatti, Pouli, Phai Mar, Namkin Tea, Sku (Mutton), Te-Mok & Phing, Thukpa and Paba , Prapu, Popoth, Markhur, Rsab, Chai, Tantan & Paba and Marzan , Sharaibai Popoth and Yhos , Momos & Milk Tea , Pouli, Milk, Local Mar & Kholak.
