Srinagar, June 10 :- Srinagar observed a shutdown and protests were reported from various areas on Friday against the blasphemous comments on Prophet Mohammad by two BJP spokespersons that have caused outrage in the Islamic world too.
As a precautionary measure, the mobile Internet has also been suspended in parts of Srinagar to maintain order.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in Srinagar’s city centre as well as the old city, officials and witnesses said.
A few two-wheelers besides a small number of cabs and auto-rickshsaws plied in the main Civil Lines area and other roads besides on the outskirts. The normal hustle bustle on the roads was missing.
Besides Srinagar, shutdown was also observed in some other areas.
No group in Kashmir had called for a shutdown on Friday.
Protests took place at several places including the city centre in Lal Chowk, Batamaloo and other areas.
The protesters in Srinagar said blasphemy against the Prophet was intolerable and demanded a strict action against the BJP leaders for their remarks against Islam. The protesters were raising slogans against the BJP leaders and demanded action against them.
According to the managing body of the historical Jamia mosque, the authorities did not allow Friday congregational prayers at the mosque.
Police said the day passed off peacefully across Kashmir.
