Srinagar Jun 07 :- Dozens of trees lining the Jawahar Nagar Ram Bagh Bund road have been hacked away in the area over the past few days .
On the one hand, tree planting is being claimed as the main factor for reducing environmental pollution however trees planted years ago on the banks of Jawahar Nagar-Ram Bagh road have been chopped off. These include mulberries, chinars and many other trees.
Awareness camps are being organized to create awareness and provide protection to the environment, but the deforestation along the banks is being carried out in such a way that the authorities leave no single tree there.
According to experts, apart from providing shade trees help in reducing the environmental pollution and are an important means of preventing flood damage and erosion of land, but in Jammu and Kashmir, deforestation is done in such a way that it does not benefit the environment.
Meanwhile, Speaking to CNS noted Kashmiri poet, social activist and environmentalist Zareef Ahmad Zareef, said that deforestation is the main cause of environmental degradation and concerned authorities should have planted new trees before cutting the older ones.
Despite these trees being the source of income are being cut down.
“I had been continuously suggesting the former CM and senior congress leader Ghulam Nabi Aazaad to plant the trees from Ram-bagh to Hajin bund with the purpose of converting the city into shades of trees”, he added.
On being contacted, official sources from I&Fc department said that they have got the directions and permission from the forest department.
