Jammu, Feb 3: “The proposed construction of new housing colonies in Srinagar, for which Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s administration transferred over 2000 Kanals of land to the Housing and Urban Development Department, will not only transform the social set up but also bring down the price of homes, enabling people to buy affordable homes at reasonable prices. The move will also add to multiple economic activities thereby generating employment”.

This was stated by Executive Member BJP J&K Raman Suri, who added that it has been ages since any government department has developed any new and good housing colony due to which the prices of existing homes has increased manifold and those in the need of houses cannot get good plots in any organised colony. This scarcity had also resulted in haphazard growth of cities and towns, which will now be checked.

Raman Suri said, the agencies like J&K Housing Board must not waste land by poor type designs and should build modern housing colonies at all 17 locations of seven villages in Srinagar and Budgam districts, where land has been transferred to Housing and Urban Development Department. Like the existing housing colonies have been commercialized and the entire charm of people living comfortably has been spoilt, the government must not allow new colonies to die a slow death in future.

He said, when both Jammu as well as Srinagar will get new and modern housing colonies, the same will enhance economic, industrial, social, and cultural development of Jammu and Kashmir, and also provide employment, which in turn will develop local areas. He added that the LG administration must involve those players into the development of these colonies who have ample experience and not let the novice waste this land by constructing unplanned and not going with the trend colonies.

Raman Suri said, Jammu and Kashmir needs new and modern colonies where all amenities including shopping arcades and other facilities are available, so that people at later stages don’t commercialise their properties and spoil the areas, like has been done with existing housing colonies in both the cities. Departments that have not developed any colony since past three decades should be asked to stay extra cautious while using the land bank and must provide people better housing infrastructure, else the private players must be roped in it.
