Opinion:

Night curfew came into force in eight districts of Jammu and Kashmir union territory. Can we ask the question: Is corona virus on the prowl during nights only? Put it another way and let’s find out if it hesitates during days now? Well, the questions may sound rhetorical but they sure are not irrelevant. They can be termed as irreverent though as the logic of the move is being questioned. People are becoming careless about observing precautions and ignore standard operating protocols (SOPs) with impunity now. They are jettisoning masks and sanitisers, two mandatory precautions that help combat the virus. As if they are `chiranjeevis’, a humourous anecdote about which we are carrying on Page 12. From a Social Media post of a police officer. The words may invoke humour but the caution that is inherent in them is a serious warning about the deadly virus. It is a very serious warning about the fatal consequences the infection can lead to. Unfortunately, it seems the administration is not taking enough of strict disciplinary actions that should be enforced in public places. One thing very significant that is being ignored is the virulence of the virus. Some of the new mutations that have been found are far more deadly than the earlier variants. Yet, it looks like a case of `familiarity breeds contempt’ syndrome or mindset. During the past few days, we have heard about National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah, and now his son, Omar, turning positive for the viral infection. This only goes to prove that the pandemic is unsparing as it can catch anyone. Both of them have access to the best of medical care, not only in India, but anywhere in the world. The lesser mortals, so called hoi polloi, may not have the resources they have. Yet, it is surprising and one watches with consternation that all around ordinary people are violating the SOPs more. For the Abdullahs, it is a professional hazard as public figures to meet sundry people almost round the clock, at all hours when they are awake! Contracting the virus can definitely not be a good experience, not an experience worth trying to emulate. Why not be warned and take precautions that exist in the ever evolving rulebook regarding the pandemic? Why create problems for the administration by behaving in a wanton manner and irresponsibly? Wishing speedy recovery to Abdullahs.
