Kargil, Sept 16: A vibrant and successful Kisan Mela was held on September 15 at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Padum, bringing together 100 progressive farmers from various villages to showcase their agricultural products and engage in activities designed to enhance farming practices.

Dr. Akhon Mohd Mehdi, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil-II, set an optimistic tone for the day by warmly welcoming the Chief Guest, dignitaries, and participants. The event underscored the crucial role of modern agricultural techniques and highlighted the impact of progressive farmers in driving agricultural advancement in the region.

In his keynote address, Nurbo, Agriculture Officer of Zanskar, emphasized the vital role of agriculture in improving the livelihoods of the tribal farming community. He called for ongoing support and innovation to empower farmers and elevate their living standards.

A key highlight of the Mela was the prize distribution ceremony, where awards were presented to farmers in recognition of their contributions and achievements. All participants were also honored with consolation prizes for their active engagement in the event.

Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil, Er. Phunchok Tashi, addressed the gathering, stressing the growing significance of organic agriculture for enhancing both environmental sustainability and farmer incomes. He advocated for the expansion of agricultural land and the export of organic produce from Zanskar to other regions as a means to boost local farmers’ earnings.

Er. Tashi directed the Agriculture Department and KVK to organize effective training programs, with a focus on mushroom production as a promising income source. He also commended the KVK team for their successful organization of the Kisan Mela, which he described as a significant benefit to the farming community.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. F.A. Shah Khan, who expressed appreciation to all participants, dignitaries, and organizers for their contributions to the Mela’s success.

The Kisan Mela at KVK Padum stands as a testament to the dynamic spirit of the region’s agricultural community and the ongoing efforts to support and enhance farming practices.
