Kargil, Sept 12: The remote village of Darchik in Kargil witnessed a significant event today with the “Plant Genetic Resources Awareness Programme/Biodiversity Fair” organized by the ICAR-NBPGR Regional Station Srinagar. The program aimed to promote the conservation of traditional plant genetic resources, focusing on vital crops such as buckwheat, millets, barley, and apricot, which are essential for nutritional security in the region’s harsh climatic conditions.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 10 local farmers, including several women, who engaged in discussions with a team of scientists from ICAR-NBPGR New Delhi, Srinagar, and the Mountain Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Kargil, University of Ladakh. The scientists underscored the importance of preserving traditional crops for the tribal communities of Darchik and introduced methods for enhancing crop sustainability.
A key highlight of the programme was the distribution of 108 seed packets each of field pea and rajmash, along with 100 multipurpose tarpaulin sheets, aimed at supporting local farmers. In recognition of their efforts in preserving local biodiversity, cash prizes were awarded to farmers who showcased exemplary crop diversity displays.
Farmers expressed their gratitude to ICAR-NBPGR for this initiative, noting that the programme will greatly benefit local agriculture and strengthen food security for their community. The event not only provided valuable resources but also fostered a deeper understanding of sustainable agricultural practices among the farmers.
