Kargil, Sept 12: The Health Department of Kargil, in collaboration with the National Mental Health Programme, hosted a significant awareness event titled “Suicide Prevention Week” at Government Council Model High School in Goma, Kargil. The initiative is part of a broader effort to address and improve mental health among the region’s youth.
The event featured presentations by psychologists Zakir Hussain from the District Hospital Kargil (DHK) and Syed Hassan Shah from the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP). Their sessions focused on suicide prevention strategies and provided a comprehensive overview of the current mental health landscape in Kargil. The psychologists emphasized the importance of early intervention and the role of mental health education in schools to equip students and staff with the tools needed to handle emotional and psychological challenges.
Kacho Shabir, a teacher at the school, shared his perspective on the urgent need for mental health education. “Mental health education is crucial in today’s environment to help students manage the pressures they face,” Shabir remarked, underscoring the relevance of the program in assisting children to navigate the stresses of modern life.
Headmaster Mohd Ismael expressed heartfelt appreciation to the medical professionals for their impactful presentations. He highlighted the importance of such programs in fostering a supportive and informed school community. “We are deeply grateful for the Health Department’s dedication to advancing mental health awareness in our schools,” Ismael said.
