Leh, Sept 08: Underlining the commitment to environmental conservation, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) urged the people of Ladakh to actively participate in preserving the climate and reiterated his dedication to safeguarding the region’s fragile ecology.

Sharing that he has planted approximately 1,000 plants around Raj Niwas in Leh as an effort to combat climate change, Mishra noted that the upcoming 13 GW solar power project for Ladakh will boost the region’s environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Also emphasising his commitment to the welfare of Ladakhi people, the LG highlighted the importance of the role of sports in fostering mental and physical well-being and sought cooperation from the people of Ladakh to help Ladakhi youth excel in sports.

The LG made these remarks while attending the closing ceremonies of two crucial sports events held in the union territory over the weekend.

On Saturday, the LG attended the final match of the Climate Cup Football Tournament between Gokulam Kerala FC and J&K Bank FC at Astroturf Open Stadium, Spituk where Gokulam FC emerged victorious, defeating J&K Bank FC by 4-0 in the final.

The LG extended congratulations to the winner and runners-up teams along with all the participating teams in the Climate Cup 2024. He expressed his gratitude to Chairman, LAHDC, Leh and the organisers for organising the tournament successfully.

Praising the initiative, the LG appreciated the decision to name the event ‘Climate Cup’ and he highlighted its significance in promoting awareness about the preservation of the environment through sports.

Emphasising his commitment to environmental conservation, the LG shared that he has planted approximately 1,000 plants around Raj Niwas in Leh as an effort to combat climate change. He urged the people of Ladakh to actively participate in preserving the climate and reiterated his dedication to safeguarding the region’s fragile ecology.

The LG stated that Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has approved 13 GW solar power project for Ladakh to boost the region’s environmental sustainability and economic growth.

He informed the audience about his discussion with experts regarding the cultivation of fodder around the solar power plant and the assurance given by experts about the feasibility of such agricultural practices. He mentioned that the project would benefit the local communities by providing additional resources along with renewable energy development in Ladakh.

Emphasising his commitment to the welfare of Ladakhi people, the LG highlighted the importance of the role of sports in fostering mental and physical well-being. He encouraged the youth of Ladakh to engage in sport activities and participate in tournaments.

Addressing football lovers, the LG urged the players and Chairman and CEC of LAHDC Leh Tashi Gyalson to strive to enable the Ladakh team to reach the final of the tournament in future. He hoped that Ladakh’s team would compete in the final match next year and assured that the UT Administration would provide all necessary support in this regard. He also commended the dignitaries for their active participation in the final match.

The LG, the CEC and other dignitaries felicitated the winning and runners-up teams.

The LG handed over the cheque of Rs 2.50 lakhs and the special Climate Cup made using Ladakhi woodcarving technique to Gokulam Kerala FC while the J&K Bank FC won Rs 1.50 lakhs as the runners-up team.

Six teams- Gokulam Kerala FC, North East United FC,1 Ladakh FC, Tibetan National Team, J&K Bank FC and Skalzaling FC- took part in the event which aimed to provide a platform for players to exhibit their skills and foster a sense of responsibility towards saving the environment.

First Lady, Neelam Mishra; Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson; Administrative Secretaries; Deputy Commissioner, Kargil  Shrikant Suse, IAS; district officers; officials from PowerGrid and Ladakh Football Association; district officials, students and large number of spectators were present during the final match, an official spokesperson said.

On Sunday, the Lieutenant Governor attended the closing ceremony of the 11th edition of Ladakh Marathon at the NDS Stadium where he felicitated the winners with medals and certificates.

Chairman and CEC of LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson; Councillor, Lower Leh,  Tsering Namgyal; Secretary, Youth Services and Sports and Tourism, Vikram Singh Malik, IAS and Founder, Ladakh, Marathon,  Chewang Motup Goba were among those present during the closing ceremony.

Congratulating the winners, runners-up and participants of the Ladakh Marathon, the LG expressed his happiness about the participation of a large number of runners in the Marathon.

Calling the Ladakh Marathon a big event, the LG hoped to see Ladakhi youth emerge as winners in the Marathon in future. Seeking cooperation from the people of Ladakh to help Ladakhi youth excel in sports, the LG also stated that he and the Hill Council Leh led by Tashi Gyalson would extend all possible support for the cause so that Ladakhi youth can bring laurels to Ladakh and the nation.

The LG hoped to see an increase in the number of participants along with the improvement in the timing in the next edition of Ladakh Marathon.

The LG also felicitated the winners and runners-ups and distributed medal, certificates and cheques among them.

In the Full Marathon, Disket Dolma (03:33:41) secured first position in Open Female category, followed by Jigmet Dolma (03:59:16), and Namgyal Lamo (04:22:11); wheresas Nawang Tsering (02:44:06), Anil Jindal (03:02:28), and Manzoor Hussain (03:06:42)secured top three spots in Open Male.

In Veteran Female category, the top spots were taken by Shamala Manmohan (05:33:41), Monika Rohrlack (06:00:28), and Mary Joshy (06:12:47) while Yaswant Rawat (04:23:46), Ashok Popli (05:03:51), and Randeep Arora (05:04:53) bagged the first three positions in Veteran Male category.

In the Half Marathon, Tashi Ladol (01:29:52), Stanzin Chondol (01:34:03), and Stanzin Dolkar (01:34:11) bagged the top spots in Open Female Category, while in Open Male category, Tsetan Namgyal (01:17:35), Tsewang Nangdan (01:17:59), and Anurag Konkar (01:18:27) secured the top three positions.

In Veteran Female category, the top three were Vidya Sundareswara (02:08:34), Sumita Balooni (02:23:11), and Dr Antje Kramer (02:53:45), while in Veteran Male category, Sukhjinder Jaspal (02:04:15), Swapan Das (02:05:48), and Deepak Raja (02:6:06) stood on the podium.

The winners of 11.2 km Run in Open Male category were Sonam Stanzin (00:44:05), Skarma Tharchen (00:46:33), and Phurbo Dorjay (00:47:10); in Veteran Female category were Rinchen Wangmo (01:36:52), Gopa Ganguly (01:38:08), and Pushpa Bhat (01:39:16), while in

Veteran Male category, Maik Becker (01:01:31), Naccarato Michele (01:04:15), and Capt Cheri Jacob (01:22:03) secured the top spots.
